The .308 Winchester is still a common choice for big game hunters and law enforcement snipers. It can also be found on the firing lines of long range rifle and service rifle competitions.  In 2014, the Canadian Arctic Rangers chose the Colt Canada C19 chambered in .308 Winchester for polar bear defense and it is one of the most popular cartridges of the Bushveld hunters in Africa.


The .308 Winchester became the most popular short action big game hunting cartridge shortly after its introduction. Eugene Stoner originally designed the AR (AR10) rifles to be chambered in .308 Winchester while working as chief engineer for ArmaLite.

Design
The .308 Winchester is a rimless bottleneck cartridge with an overall length of 2.8” and  a case capacity of 56 grains (H2O). It uses large rifle primers and fires a .308” diameter bullet with maximum pressure of 62,000 PSI.
While a 150 grain bullet traveling at 2800 feet per second was the beginning, shooters have a wide array of options for bullet types and weights depending on need; from full metal jacket for target shooting to premium hollow points for big game hunting or lighter weight options for varmint and predator control.
