The 30-06 Springfield Ammo was introduced to the US Army in 1906 before it became standardized and stayed in use, in service, with the army until the late 1970s. It is 7.62 × 63mm in metric notation and has its parent case as the 30-06 Springfield. The 30-06 Springfield Ammo's name originates from the number of bullet caliber it possesses in inches which are 30. The "06" is a reference to the year 1906, when the cartridge was adopted.
