Few autoloading rimfire rifles have endured the test of time and the marketplace like the Browning SA-22. The SA-22 is one of the first semi-auto rimfire rifles ever made, and one of the most desirable. One of John M. Browning’s final designs, his genius shines through in every feature. The slim, forged steel receiver and slender barrel takes down into two compact units without tools. The SA-22’s tasteful engraving and select walnut make it an object of lasting beauty and enjoyment. Though nice to look at, these rifles are meant to be enjoyed in the field as much as they are admired as heirlooms. If one word were to describe the Semi-Auto 22 it would be "CLASSIC." Like the famous Automatic 5 shotgun or a Hi Power pistol, the Semi-Auto 22 gives you a real sense of the incredible design skills and genius of John Moses Browning. And the quality of wood and steel will exceed your expectations.

Browning SA-22 Features

The Browning SA-22 is a semi-automatic rifle that operates on a direct-blowback action.  The internal components are rather unique when compared to other tube-fed rifles with its stock-mounted magazine.  This rifle is built with a 19.25 inch barrel topped with windage-adjustable iron sights with modern production models including a Picatinny style rail.

Browning SA-22 Capacity

The SA-22 is chambered in .22LR and feeds from an internal tube magazine with a capacity of 10 rounds.  This gun can also cycle .22 Short cartridges which gives it a capacity of 15 rounds, though the lower chamber pressure may cause the gun to short-stroke.  Rounds are loaded into the magazine tube through the loading port on the right side of the buttstock.
With an unloaded weight of 5.2 pounds and an overall length of 37 inches, the Browning SA-22 offers an identical ease of movement to the Ruger 10/22 due to its equal length and weight.  The SA-22 lacks any protruding edges, an attribute that helps prevent it from catching on dense vegetation when you’re out squirrel hunting or popping soda cans in the back yard.

Browning SA-22 Mobility

Mobility

Browning SA-22 Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The SA-22 has a very traditional handling style thanks to its traditional half-pistol grip integrated in its stock and wooden handguard.  The strangest ergonomic learning curve with this rifle is the reloading process that loads cartridges into the side of the stock.  Aside from that, the rifle handles almost identically to other pre-war .22 caliber rifle designs.

Browning SA-22 Fit & Finish

The Browning SA-22 uses a number of stainless steel internal components to help ensure proper function with sub-par lubricants and to prevent parts from rusting together.  The trigger, its housing, the receiver and the barrel are made out of carbon steel that are blued to prevent damage from rust, weather and wear, and the wood stock and grip are sealed with a semi-gloss lacquer.
