Magpul Masada Features

The Magpul Masada was the predecessor of Bushmaster’s and Remington’s ACR and was designed as a prototype for the US Army’s ACR program in the early 2000s.  This rifle was designed to address all of the shortfalls of the M4 carbine.  These design improvements include a folding adjustable stock, a short-stroke gas piston, ambidextrous controls, and a quick-change barrel.  The project started out as an improvement for the M4, but by the time the engineers were done with it, the only parts that remained the same were the trigger group, firing pin, magazine and barrel.  Everything else on the ACR was a new part.

Magpul Masada Capacity

The Magpul Masada is chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO (.223 Remington) and feeds from any AR15 pattern magazine giving it a standard capacity of 30 rounds.  Naturally, the shorter 5, 10 and 20 round magazines can be inserted and used with no issues, as can the larger 40, 60 and 100 round box magazines.  This rifle doesn’t function so well with drum magazines, though, as most drums are designed without enough R&D.
The Masada was designed to use barrels ranging from 10.3 inches up to 16.5 allowing the user to end up with a rifle that could easily be converted for the task at hand.  With a 16.5 inch barrel, the Masada measures 36.5 inches long and has an unloaded weight of 7.1 pounds keeping it on pace with the AR15, but its folding stock allows the Masada to collapse down to less than 24 inches (or less with a shorter barrel).  Any ACR is easier to carry when climbing in and out of vehicles while the short barrel models allow the user to easily maneuver close-quarter environments.

Magpul Masada Ergonomics

Ergonomics
Aside from the reversible charging handle, the Masada has fully-ambidextrous controls.  The folding stock can be adjusted for length of pull, and the cheek riser can be adjusted to provide a much more rapid and consistent sight picture.  The pistol grip is longer than a standard AR15 grip, and happens to be the inspiration for the geometry of Magpul’s MOE grip.  The front handguard has a few different styles that include a triangular cross-section similar to the G36, there are rails with M-Lok slots, and there are tri-rail handguards, each with their own pros and cons.

Magpul Masada Fit & Finish

The Masada is available in black and Coyote Brown and is as modular as an AR15.  The disassembly is a bit more involved than an AR, however cleaning it is still very simple.  Where this rifle excels over the AR platform is in its superior durability where in the AR’s internal piston action (the squares call it direct impingement) will dump carbon all inside the action, the Masada’s gas system keeps the carbon around the piston.  This slows the amount of carbon buildup inside the gun which keeps the parts from wearing down as quickly.
