NAMBU Type 14 Features

Based on the earlier Type A pistol designed by Kijirō Nambu, the Type 14 was developed at Nagoya Arsenal in the mid-1920s. Although Nambu himself had no role in its design,  the aim of the project was to create a cheaper and simpler version of the Type A that would be easier to mass-produce. In 1925, the finished pistol was produced at Kokura Arsenal in Tokyo and adopted by the Imperial Japanese Army, primarily being issued to officers.

NAMBU Type 14 Ballistics

NAMBU Type 14 Capacity

The Nambu Type 14 is chambered in 8x22mm Nambu and feeds from a single-tack 8-round magazine.  The magazine itself is proprietary to the Type 14 and has a contoured floor plate that aids the user in extracting a magazine that can’t drop free on its own.

NAMBU Type 14 Ergonomics

The Nambu Type 14 has a rather unique control setup where the safety is mounted along the front of the frame and rotates 180 degrees between safe and fire.  The charging handle is behind the bolt in a fashion similar to the more modern Ruger .22 caliber target pistols.  The magazine release is placed in a somewhat normal spot behind the trigger.  The grip panels and the grip’s contours offer a good enough grip to operate the gun, however the geometry is far from ideal for most shooters.

NAMBU Type 14 Fit & Finish

Most Nambu Type 14 pistols are “war capture” examples and are not only difficult to find, but are available in varying conditions.  Late-production examples have very crude surface finishes and many weren’t surface-treated so current surface finishes decades later vary greatly.
