SIG Sauer MCX Virtus Features

The SIG Sauer MCX Virtus is available as a rifle and a pistol and acts as the next evolution of the AR15.  Unlike the AR platform that dumps carbon inside of the bolt with its internal-piston action, the MCX uses a short-stroke gas piston action where the recoil spring assembly sits above the bolt cavity in order to allow for a folding stock.  Both in a rifle and pistol configuration (16.5 and 10.5 inch barrel lengths), the MCX has a free-floating handguard that offers a continued top rail for mounting any optics setup.

SIG Sauer MCX Virtus Capacity

The MCX Virtus is available in 5.56x45mm NATO (.223 Remington) as well as .300 Blackout and feeds from any AR15 pattern magazine.  This gives the MCX a standard magazine capacity of 30 rounds, however the smaller 5, 10 and 20 round mags will work, as will the 40, 60 and 100 round magazines.  While any 5.56/.223 round will work in any magazine, some mags won’t actually properly load .300 Blackout, especially the quad-stack and drum magazines.

The MCX has an unloaded weight of 7.9 pounds and measures 35.5 inches with the stock out and fully collapsed.  Though its overall length is that of a typical AR15, it weighs approximately 1 extra pound due to its thicker receivers and handguard.  While this does reduce its mobility, the trade-off is a softer felt-recoil impulse.  Because the rifle has a folding stock, it is much easier to navigate tighter spaces than a standard AR.

SIG Sauer MCX Virtus Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The MCX has identical operating controls to the AR15 with the added improvements of fully-ambidextrous controls.  Any stock can be added to this rifle with an adapter, though the factory-installed adjustable/folding stock offers a thin yet comfortable cheek weld as well as solid support.  The handguard has a somewhat square and boxy cross section that might take some getting used to, though it’s full-length which allows the user to hold it anywhere and add any forward attachments.

SIG Sauer MCX Virtus Fit & Finish

The MCX is built on a billet receiver set made of the typical 7075-T6 aluminum, but that’s not the most interesting part.  Unlike an AR15, the MCX has a curtailed bolt carrier and modified AR bolt that allows the assembly to fit in the rifle without the need for a buffer tube.  The recoil springs sit over the bolt assembly like a double-spring AK bolt.  Combining this with a short-stroke gas piston, the MCX runs both cooler and cleaner which improves the longevity of the rifle.
