The classic M16A1 was the iconic rifle of the Vietnam War. It was issued to the vast majority of U.S. soldiers during the conflict, and its general success in combat led to its continued service in the U.S. armed forces in varied forms over the years. A virtual match to the classic design, featuring the same unique triangular handguard, 20-inch pencil-profile chrome-lined barrel with a 1:12-inch twist, and recognizable carrying handle

Colt M16A1 Retro Reissue Features

The Colt M16A1 is a semi-automatic, gas-operated AR15 that is designed to perfectly mimic the original M16 rifle in look and feel, but is built with the improvements of the A1 pattern rifle over the classic M16.  This rifle operates on an internal-piston action because “direct impingement” is a misnomer, and uses a rifle-length gas tube paired with a 20 inch “pencil profile” barrel.  The front sight block has an elevation-adjustable front sight post while the A1 pattern upper receiver has a windage-adjustable rear aperture sight contained in its integrated carry handle.

Colt M16A1 Retro Reissue Capacity

The Colt M16A1 Retro Reissue is chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO (.223 Remington) and feeds from all STANAG pattern 5.56 magazines allowing for capacities of 5, 10, 20 and 30 rounds.  Due to Colt’s insistence on making the gun as true as possible, the flare in the magazine well is not cut to accept 2nd Gen PMags nor can it accept drums or the quad-stack magazines.

Measuring 39 inches long with an unloaded weight under 6.5 pounds, the M16A1 was the lightest infantry rifle ever fielded.  Its light weight allowed soldiers and Marines to carry the rifle with far less fatigue and strain than they had with the M1 Garand and M14 rifles, and its relatively short overall length allowed it to perform and handle better in tight spaces.  With Colt’s semi-auto reproduction, you can experience the handling for yourself!

Colt M16A1 Retro Reissue Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The M16A1 is made with A1-compatible components including its fixed stock, pistol grip and its handguard that features a triangular cross section.  The controls are Mil-Spec and are set up for right-handed use.  Due to the pencil profile barrel, the rifle’s center of gravity rests around the barrel nut providing an incredibly balanced platform that delivers very soft recoil.

Colt M16A1 Retro Reissue Fit & Finish

The Colt M16A1 Reproduction is made with a receiver set made of 7075-T6 aircraft grade aluminum and its 20-inch barrel includes a chrome-lined chamber.  The handguard, stock and grip are made of fiberglass composites.  The bolt is made out of Carpenter 158 while the carrier is made of 8620 steel and features a nickel-boron coating to give it a classic shine and durable finish.
