Marlin 1895 Cowboy Features

The Marlin 1895 Cowboy is a lever-action rifle based on John Browning’s Winchester 1895 design.  It is available with a 26 inch barrel that can either be octagonal or turned (round) topped with a windage-adjustable front sight and elevation-adjustable rear sight.  It uses a single-action trigger and hammer setup where the hammer is retracted as the action is cycled.

Marlin 1895 Cowboy Capacity

The Marlin 1895 Cowboy is chambered in .45-70 and feeds from a fixed tube magazine with a 9 round capacity.  To load the rifle, you can pull back the lever and “breech load” it by throwing rounds into the chamber, or you can load rounds into the magazine tube through the loading gate on the right side of the receiver.

Measuring 44.5 inches long with an unloaded weight around 8 pounds, the Marlin 1895 Cowboy rifle is easy enough to carry over long durations, however its length does require it to be used in more open environments.  Its lack of protruding edges will prevent it from getting caught on dense vegetation if you decide to take this gun out hunting.

Marlin 1895 Cowboy Mobility

Mobility

Marlin 1895 Cowboy Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The Marlin 1895 Cowboy perfectly copies the ergonomics of the classic 1895 with its straight-grip stock and enlarged front handguard.  Both are checkered for grip and decoration.  With the longer barrel and magazine, the Cowboy model has a more front-heavy balance due to the added weight with the extra material, but that can be a benefit as front-heavy guns have less muzzle sway when firing from the shoulder.

Marlin 1895 Cowboy Fit & Finish

The Marlin 1895 Cowboy uses stainless steel for its bolt and a handful of internal components.  The remainder of the metal parts are made of high-carbon steel and are blued to prevent damage from weather and wear.  The stock and handguard are made of American Walnut and are sealed with linseed oil to prevent moisture from damaging the wood while also keeping the wood flexible so it doesn’t crack under pressure.
