The SA80 (Small Arms for the 1980s) is a British family of 5.56×45mm NATO service weapons used by the British Army. The L85 Rifle variant has been the standard issue service rifle of the British Armed Forces since 1987, replacing the L1A1 Self-Loading Rifle. The first prototypes were created in 1976, with production of the A1 variant starting in 1985 and ending in 1994. The A2 variant came to be as the result of a significant upgrade in the early 2000s by Heckler & Koch and remains in service as of 2020. The A3 variant was first issued in 2018 with several new improvements.

RSAF Enfield L85 (SA80) Features

The L85 (SA80) is a select-fire bullpup rifle that operates on a converted AR18 action with a rotating bolt and short-stroke gas piston.  The rifle can be fired in semi- or full-auto and has a 20 inch barrel topped with iron sights that can easily be removed to accept optics.  The L85 has a reputation of being the worst standard infantry rifle due to poor reliability that the Germans couldn’t even properly fix.

RSAF Enfield L85 (SA80) Capacity

The L85 (SA80) is chambered in 5.56x45mmNATO and feeds from AR15/M16/M4 STANAG magazines.  Most commonly issued with 30 round magazines, the L85 can also use the shorter 20 round magazines.  While 60 round drum magazines will fit, the British-issued ammo doesn’t allow the gun to cycle in a manner that produces reliable operation from the drum magazines.
The L85 measures just shy of 31 inches long and has an unloaded weight of 11 pounds making it the heaviest 5.56 caliber standard infantry rifle ever serviced.  While its short length would suggest easy maneuvering in close-quarter environments, the considerable weight negates any advantage one would get from the bullpup design.  The rifle also can’t be properly fired from the left shoulder without the charging handle and hot brass hitting the user in the face, which i a considerable drawback for a combat rifle.

RSAF Enfield L85 (SA80) Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The L85 arguably has the worst control layout of any self-loading rifle.  The reciprocating charging handle is located on the right side of the bolt which forbids left-handed use, the bolt release is located on the right side of the receiver behind the breach, the magazine release is located on the left side of the gun behind the magazine, and the safety selector is located on the bottom of the gun.  A typical reload cannot be done one-handed.

RSAF Enfield L85 (SA80) Fit & Finish

The L85 has undergone multiple design overhauls due to poor performance; the original polymer components would melt if they came into contact with the troop-issued insect repellant.  The newest iteration, the L85A3, claims to have fixed all of its reliability issues and comes from the factory with a free-floating KeyMod handguard.  All versions of the L85 have been made with stamped receivers.
