Ruger AR-556 Pistol Features

The Ruger AR-556 Pistol is a semi-automatic pistol version of the AR15 rifle that operates on the standard internal-piston action found in AR’s.  It is built with a 10.5 inch barrel paired with a carbine-length gas system on the 5.56mm builds and a pistol-length gas system on the .300 Blackout builds.  Both are assembled with mil-spec pattern carbine-length buffer tubes making them excellent candidates to turn into an SBR, though they can easily be fired without shouldering.

Ruger AR-556 Pistol Capacity

The Ruger AR-556 Pistol is chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO (.223 Remington) as well as .300 Blackout and feeds from standard AR15 pattern magazines giving this pistol a standard capacity of 30 rounds.  Shorter 5, 10 and 20 round magazines can easily be found as well as larger 40, 60 and 100 round box magazines, and the 5.56 versions can also accept 60 and 100 round drum magazines.

Measuring 24 inches long with an unloaded weight well under 7 pounds, the AR-556 pistol allows the user to easily navigate through tight spaces with ease and its light weight prevents fatigue when it’s carried over long durations.  Its length also makes it a good candidate for a “truck gun” that can be tucked behind or below a seat for quick retrieval without getting caught on anything.

Ruger AR-556 Pistol Mobility

Ruger AR-556 Pistol Ergonomics

The AR-556 Pistol has the same operating and fire controls as its rifle counterpart since its short barrel and lack of a stock are the only notable differences.  This pistol is equipped with a 9 inch free-floating M-Lok handguard that has an octagonal cross section offering a very comfortable support grip and has a pistol grip that is deeper to better fill the shooter’s hand when compared to a Mil-Spec grip.

Ruger AR-556 Pistol Fit & Finish

The Ruger AR-556 Pistol is built on a forged receiver set made by Cero Fabrications as noted by the “keyhole” forge mark on the upper.  The receivers are made of 7075-T6 aircraft grade aluminum, as are the handguard and buffer tube, and are protected with a Type-III hard-coat anodize coating to protect against damage from weather and wear.  The internal components are all Mil-Spec with a black nitride bolt carrier group.

Fit and Finish

Ruger AR-556 Pistol Concealability

It won’t fit inside your beltline, but it can definitely fit under or behind the seat of a vehicle.  This pistol makes for an excellent companion weapon when out on a hog hunt and it can fit inside of a large hiking pack allowing it to be discreetly taken on a camping trip to defend against rabid or intrusive animals without your anti-gun friends and family knowing you have it unless it’s needed.
