The SIG-Sauer P228 pistol was developed from the larger framed SIG-Sauer P226 pistol in 1989. This happened in the same way that the earlier P225 pistol had grown from the P220 – basically some length was chopped from the barrel and slide, as well as from the grip. The overall shape of the P228 was made slightly more rounded and so more suited for concealed carry. In 1991 it was adopted by the US Armed forces as the M11 pistol, and is still issued to Military Police and some other units. The P228 is also a highly popular police and civilian sidearm and widely issued to law enforcement forces in Europe and the USA.

SIG Sauer P228 Features

The SIG Sauer P228 is a very modular aluminum-framed, semi-automatic pistol that operates on a Browning-style short recoil action with a tilting 3.9 inch barrel.  This pistol can be fired from either a double- or single-action trigger pull and has windage-adjustable iron sights on top of a stainless steel slide.  Newer versions of this pistol include a Picatinny-style accessory rail on the front of the frame.

SIG Sauer P228 Capacity

The SIG Sauer P228 is available in 3 calibers: 9mm Parabellum (9mm Luger, 9x19mm NATO), .357 SIG, and .40 Short & Wimpy.  In .357 and .40, this pistol has a 12 round magazine that can be shared between the calibers requiring only a barrel swap while the 9mm setups have a 15 round magazine.  This pistol does not share magazine compatibility with the P226.  Mags limited to 10 rounds are available for users in communist-controlled states.

SIG Sauer P228 Ergonomics

Ergonomics
The P228 has the same control setup as the other P220 series pistols with a slightly wider grip to accommodate a magazine well that accepts both 9mm and .40 caliber magazines.  This and other P220 series pistols has a manual decocker that allows the user to set the hammer from single-action down to double-action without having to touch the trigger, and there is no external safety.

SIG Sauer P228 Fit & Finish

The P228 has an aluminum frame that is anodized to prevent corrosion and has a stainless steel slide and barrel with a Nitron coating that protects it from wear, corrosion and rust.  The smaller steel parts are black phosphate coated and have the potential to grow rust if they’re not kept oiled.

Fit and Finish

SIG Sauer P228 Concealability

Concealability
Although the P228 is technically a compact pistol due to its slightly shorter grip, concealment is extremely difficult, and potentially uncomfortable with the exposed hammer.  This pistol is most easily packed in an open-carry setup such as a duty belt or competition holster that sits outside of the waistband.
